The name comes from the bud’s coloring. It may feature purples, greens, and more – all of which call to mind the famous Northern Lights!

Northern Lights Strain Origin

Even though the name calls to mind Nordic Fjords, this bad boy’s parents hail from Afghanistan and Thailand. Rumor has it that it was first grown in Washington state and later reached popularity in the Netherlands around 1985.

What we do know is that this cult classic and fan favorite has parents some of the most popular strains on the market today. This includes Super Silver Haze and Shiva Skunk – just to name a few!

Growing Northern Lights Feminized Seeds

These are feminized seeds. Female plants, contrary to male plants, are the ones that actually produce weed. They start flowering when they receive less light per day, i.e. in the Fall or when you manipulate the light cycle indoors.

Northern Lights Plants

This plant is deceptive in a fun way. It isn’t a tall plant, which can be disappointing if you don’t know how much awesome bud it’s going to produce! This is one of our favorite high yielding compact plants (it tops out at 28 inches in height) and is a classic for both indoor and outdoor growers.

Best Climate For Northern Lights

If growing outdoors, think west coast all the way. Moderate climate, sunny, and you’ll get great bud in no time! It can actually get a lot bigger grown outdoors if handled the right way.

Flowering & Yield

The flowering time is, on average, 7-9 weeks often falling on the shorter side-so keep an eye out. Outdoor growers will harvest in mid-October at the latest.

So what’s the yield? Good question! This is always dependent on the right circumstances. Light-hours, grow medium, nutrients and pruning all play a factor. When all goes well you can expect yields towards 18 ounces in a 3x3ft field. Outdoor plants may even yield more.

Northern Lights Effects

You looking for a well-balanced high that relaxes the mind and body without wearing you out or locking you on the couch? You are going to love Northern Lights!

The strain is famous for producing deeply relaxing highs that transition into uplifting euphoria. That’s why users feel calm but not couch locked. If you want a great nighttime sleep aid, you can double down and slip into slumber with its sleepy side benefit!

The reason for this is Northern Lights is a body focused high. That’s why it’s so surprising to come with awesome side benefits like euphoric feelings, laughter, and smiles. It also acts quickly and is a great instant release for people plagued by stress, negative thoughts, and anxiety.

Northern Lights, like most strains, produces the same issues if left unchecked. That includes dry eyes and dry mouth. These are easily treated by making sure to stay hydrated before and during your smoke!

If you are a new user and roll over into ‘too-high’ territory, there’s a chance you might experience a headache or mild paranoia, but pulling back can provide immediate relief if symptoms start to manifest.

Northern Lights Taste & Smell

Northern Lights is an easy smoke known for its pleasant smell and taste. Unlike Sour Diesel or other ‘smell heavy’ strains, Northern Lights is all earthy and sweet with a distinct pine finish. You might get a touch of citrus, lime, or even a touch of ammonia (skunk smell) as well.

As far as flavor goes, the experience is pretty mellow. This is subtle all the way with touches of lemon sweetness, fresh pine, and a lingering earthy (but not skunky) palate pleasing taste.

Uses for Northern Lights

Northern Lights’ body focused high makes it a great aid for both physical and mental problems. Suffering from pains, PMS, headaches or migraines, muscle spasms or hypertension or arthritis? Northern Lights has a relaxing effect.

Do you struggle with mood swings, or stress? Northern Lights’ fast-acting effect may help to get through those rough patches.
